Short Course in Bowel Care for Disability Workers

This course is recommended for people who, as part of their work role assist clients with the administration of prescribed rectal medications (suppositories and enemas). This course will equip participants with the knowledge, skills and practical training to safely and effectively administer rectal medication.

What content does the course cover?

This course provides participants with the essential knowledge, skills and practical training required to safely and effectively assist clients with their prescribed rectal medications (suppositories and enemas).

Prerequisite – All participants must have completed medication training prior to attending the session.

The content of this course includes:

  • Basic anatomy and physiology of the digestive system
  • Factors that encourage and promote bowel health for people with a disability
  • Commonly prescribed bowel medications and their safe administration
  • Safe work practices to prevent and control infection
  • Demonstration and practical experience
  • Troubleshooting common contingencies
  • Documentation

Does this program have any prerequisites?

Prerequisite – All participants must have completed medication training prior to attending the session.

Course completion requires

Successful completion of this course requires the participant to be involved in learning activities, class discussion and practical skills training in simulated workplace scenarios. Participant’s knowledge and practical skills in assisting clients with the prescribed rectal medications are concepts assessed during the course.
